Take Care In Case of Fire - From the Coalition for Clean Air

  • Monitor Air Quality

Regularly check the Air Quality Index (AQI) for your area. Use resources like AirNow to track smoke levels. If the AQI is 101 or higher, smoke levels can be harmful to your health.

  • Stay Indoors

If smoke levels are high, limit your outdoor activities, particularly strenuous exercise. Stay indoors, with doors and windows closed. Use air conditioning with a clean filter if possible, and avoid using a fan that could bring in more outdoor smoke.

  • Create a Clean Indoor Environment

If you have an air purifier, use it to help reduce indoor pollution. HEPA filters are effective in trapping particles in the air.Keep indoor air as clean as possible by avoiding activities that could introduce more pollutants, such as smoking or using candles.

  • Use N95 Masks (If Necessary)

If you must go outside and smoke is present, wear an N95 respirator mask, which can help filter out harmful particles. Cloth masks or surgical masks are not effective for this purpose.

  • Keep Windows and Doors Closed

Even if it's hot outside, keeping windows and doors closed is vital to prevent smoke from entering your home.

  • Limit Physical Activity

Avoid strenuous physical activity outdoors when air quality is poor. If you need to exercise, do it indoors with the air purifier running.

  •  Stay Hydrated and Protect Your Eyes

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and protect your eyes with glasses or goggles if they are irritated by the smoke.

  • Special Considerations

Children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with respiratory or heart conditions should take extra precautions and stay indoors whenever possible.
